It all started on Friday Morning, August, 1, 2014. Ruth McGuire Eads and Anita Holmans Gregg decorated the meeting room at the Hilton Garden Inn at Grapevine, TX, and folks started showing up early. Thanks to Homer Rolston's coordination several of us were able to play golf at the Dallas Tour 18 Course in the morning and then we joined the crowd at the hotel to reminisce and talk about old times and "where they are now".
There were plenty of "hugs" and "handshakes" as folks asked "who's that", and there were some "Oh My"s as identities were revealed. Folks kept arriving all day and in the evening small groups formed and headed out to dinner at the various places near the hotel. Later everyone re-convened and continued their reminiscing over some "adult beverages".
Saturday morning saw another golf game, this time at the Grapevine Golf Course, while others hung out at the hotel enjoying coffee and breakfast as folks continued to arrive. Later in the afternoon we gathered for a group picture followed by an excellent catered dinner at the hotel, and then a program put together by Ruth and Anita, which even included a "memory test" of things we remembered from the 1960's growing up in Kermit. Each person was asked to tell everyone what they had been doing for the past 50 years, talk about their families, children and grandchildren, and "where they are now". It was great to hear of the many travels, experiences, and adventures the members of our class completed over the years and learn how we had impacted the entire world in so many ways since graduation. Mike Lambert provided a great tribute to the class members no longer with us, and reminded us of just how lucky we were to have the great opportunity to grow up in Kermit together, and how our history as a class has influenced us all, how we've impacted many lives around the world, and how we have provided an outstanding legacy for other's to follow.
Awards were given for the classmate that "traveled the farthest" to come to the reunion (Jennifer Michael), the one with the most children, and grandchildren (both won by Mike Lambert), the one who had changed the most, and the least, and the one with the most, and least hair. And we honored Ruth McGuire for her 50 years serving as our "Class Secretary". She has kept the records, tracked folks down, made countless telephone calls, and sent hundreds of emails through the years to help us keep in touch. She represented our class at Alumni Association meetings and All-Classes Reunions and she has maintained our connection with Kermit High School throughout the past 50 years, and because of her work we owe her our gratitude and admiration. We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated person as our "Secretary", and she is obviously someone who cares deeply about maintaining our close ties and friendships.
We discussed our next reunion, the 60th, to be held in 2024, at a place yet to be determined, and finally we closed our 50th Reunion by standing together once again to sing the KHS "Fight Song", and of course, the "School Song". It was a truly outstanding reunion event.
